Schema Therapy
Schema therapy was developed to treat personality disorders or when patients are not successful in other therapeutic interventions. A schema is a pattern of behaviour, and the therapy looks at identifying what these may be and how they are used as coping mechanisms. It is an integrative therapy, which combines different techniques and methods from various psychotherapies. There are three techniques used in schema therapy: cognitive, experiential, and behavioural.
The reason why Schema therapy is so popular is that it helps a patient understand how they may unconsciously respond to difficult or traumatic circumstances. A therapist who uses schema therapy will attempt to challenge a patient on their responses to a set stimulus. The therapist may use experiences from the patient’s life or scenarios that imitate them to highlight the schemas to their patient. Like other forms of psychological counselling, schema therapy relies upon a strong relationship between the patient and the therapist.
Schema Therapy Glasgow
It is never easy confronting behaviours that disrupt your life. Sometimes these behaviours are difficult to identify, and so it is hard to understand what you are trying to find a solution for. Here at Psychology Scotland, we have prioritised creating a comfortable environment so you can approach therapy with an open mind. Our friendly and hospitable therapy centre will allow you to begin your journey without any unnecessary stress. Whether you are new to therapy or are looking to start therapeutic intervention for the first time, you will be welcomed at Psychology Scotland.
Our professional therapists and counsellors will begin by assessing what therapy programme best suits your needs. You can be assured that all interventions have been practised for a considerable amount of time, and all of them are backed by strong empirical evidence. Once we have identified a service that directly matches your needs, you can begin to develop the essential coping mechanisms that will improve the state of your mental wellbeing. The skills you will learn at Psychology Scotland will be with you long after you left your official therapy period. The tools we equip you with will allow you to maintain a positive outlook on life.
Schema therapy has been assessed for managing borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, and forms of depression. After a course of schema therapy, you will be able to identify and adjust negative patterns of behaviour that impact your daily choices. It can take around 20 sessions for the benefits to become, but once you have learnt the details about your coping mechanisms, you can begin to develop healthier behaviours that will impact the quality of your life and those around you. Taking the first step toward psychological intervention is often the hardest one, and we want to be with you during your therapeutic journey. Psychology Scotland has your interests at heart, and we are ready to be with you during your path toward self-improvement.
