Mindfulness is the practice of being in the present moment. To achieve mindfulness, activities such as meditation and contemplation are encouraged. To be mindful is to be aware of all bodily sensations and thoughts. In a mindful state, individuals do not become anxious or concerned with their thoughts. Rather, they can observe them without indulging in any negative behaviours. Mindfulness has been found to alleviate symptoms of compulsion and addictive behaviours.
Practising mindfulness during therapy may be difficult at first as it requires a patient to simply sit with their thoughts rather than act upon them. However, over time a patient will become used to practising mindfulness. Therapies such as person-centred therapy (PCT) and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) cultivate the act of becoming mindful of one’s present state of mind. As a patient becomes mindful through meditation and observation, they can better understand the root of unwanted behaviours.
