Gestalt therapy
Gestalt therapy was developed primarily in the 1940s and 1950s, and it is known for its focus on personal responsibility. It is a form of psychotherapy that analyses how an individual experiences the world in the present moment. Patients in gestalt therapy are encouraged to look at the larger picture of their situations and consider the self in decisions. Rather than facilitate the patient's healing process, gestalt therapy stresses the importance of presence.
Unlike other forms of psychotherapy, gestalt therapy is considered to be experimental. How the therapist engages with their patient and how they get them to focus on the present moment, is entirely at the discretion of the professional. Techniques often associated with gestalt therapy include the therapist asking the patient to imagine the presence of a parent or a manager in the room. Meditation techniques are also associated with gestalt. The intended results of gestalt therapy are to engage the patient with selfhood and the concept of choice.
