Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the most common forms of psychological counselling. It relies on the communication of cognitive distortions such as thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes between the client and therapist. CBT is so effective because it looks to challenge the emotional responses of an individual that stem from the distortions listed. As a result, the client can begin to develop and improve upon coping strategies that will help them solve present life difficulties.

In contrast to psychotherapy, CBT does not focus on the unconscious meaning that lies behind thoughts and behaviours. Instead, CBT is an action-oriented form of counselling that looks to identify strategies that may alleviate symptoms of a cognitive disorder. CBT is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, but various academic studies have shown that it is effective as a stand-alone treatment. CBT is commonly used to alleviate depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Glasgow

Here at Psychology Scotland, we understand that it is daunting to enter the therapy process. Stepping through the doors of a therapy centre to seek out help is often the most challenging step. As an acknowledgement, we have created a comfortable environment that is accessible for anyone who may be new to therapy. For a therapeutic intervention to be successful, it must be conducted in a friendly and hospitable environment.

Once you make that tough decision to enter the process of therapy, you will be greeted by our professionally trained therapists who will guide you through your counselling journey. After initial assessments, our experts will be able to identify the best approach for your situation, which may result in undertaking a course of CBT. The course of action that best suits your situation may be either a programme of CBT as a stand-alone therapy or the combination of CBT with other forms of treatment. Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and person-centred therapy (PCT) have been shown to work well when used alongside CBT. Whichever therapeutic intervention is decided upon, you should be confident that it is the right approach for your situation. All our methods are supported by strong empirical evidence and have a proven track record with our existing clients.

The results of CBT can be rewarding, and they will help you deal with your personal difficulties. Undertaking a course of CBT will moderate your symptoms of anxiety, build your sense of self-esteem, and help you understand reactions to intrusive thoughts better. Most clients respond positively to CBT after around six to 24 sessions, and it can be strategized long after your official counselling has ended. Psychology Scotland wants to take that first step with you towards improving your life for the future. The treatments we offer will aid you in unpacking your difficulties, helping you make better decisions for yourself and your loved ones. We want to start with you along this path towards a better state of mental wellbeing.
