Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented form of therapy that aims at matching a patient’s behaviour with their values. To achieve the marriage between the two, ACT uses mindfulness strategies to help a patient understand what is within their control. ACT was developed in 1982 and uses concepts commonly associated with Buddhism. Patients undertaking ACT are encouraged to observe their surroundings and asked to contemplate the presence of themself in relation to their observations.
ACT has become a popular form of treatment because it cultivates psychological flexibility. Rather than focus on reducing unwanted thoughts and behaviours, the patient is asked instead to think about the development of these factors alongside the course of their life. Patients undertaking a course of ACT report higher receptivity to the idea of the present moment, allowing them to move toward value-oriented behaviours.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Glasgow
Being present in the moment is difficult to achieve, especially when we are under the pressure of life and work. Our thoughts constantly veer toward unwanted memories, doubts, and fears surrounding the future. Here at Psychology Scotland, we understand the challenges you face daily, and we are here to ease you into the therapy process. Our psychological centre is a friendly and hospitable environment, so you can start treatment without any unnecessary pressure. Whether you are new to therapy or are looking to re-enter treatment, we have created a service that is accessible to all walks of life.
Our professional therapists will work alongside you to build the most suitable programme for your needs. You can be assured that all our clinical programmes are rooted in strong empirical evidence. Every therapeutic intervention we offer has been tried and tested, and our methods have proven to work. Once we have chosen the most appropriate therapeutic programme, you will begin developing essential skills that can help you maintain an improved state of wellbeing. We aim to provide you with the tools to positively impact your life long after you have finished your course of psychological intervention.
If you are advised to take ACT on its own or as part of an integrative approach, you can expect to build skills that will encourage you to be more present in the moment. ACT will give you a greater understanding of your emotions and how they impact your decisions. Instead of avoiding difficulties or acting impulsively, ACT will grant you the clarity to act from a position of value. Because of its focus on self-observation, ACT is particularly useful for treating anxiety, compulsive disorders, and some forms of depression. If these issues impact your life and how you frame the future, it may be the right time to seek therapy. Taking that first step toward a psychological service is often the hardest one because it relies upon an acceptance of a problem. At Psychology Scotland, we want to support you through your therapeutic journey so that you can build a better future for yourself and your loved ones.
